Raymond Montagna, 1916 - 2006
Raymond J. Montagna, age 90, of Springfield and Rockport, Massachusetts; passed away Thursday, November 9, 2006 at home at Reeds Landing. Raymond was born November 9, 1916 in Agawam, Massachusetts to Peter and Louise (Gerani) Montagna.
He was a graduate of Agawam High School, and received his Bachelor of Science degree from American International College in Springfield. Ray went on to obtain his Master's Degree of Education and 6th Year Degree both at Springfield College. He played basketball, baseball and football in high school and college. He was an avid golfer, scoring a hole in one at Franconia Golf Course July 5, 1971. He was a veteran, serving his country during World War II as Captain in the United States Air Force. He was also a former member of the Springfield Rotary Club.
Ray was a life long educator working within the Springfield public school system. He served as Principal of Classical High School from 1961 to 1971 and was Asst. Superintendent of Schools for secondary education until his retirement in 1978.
Raymond is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Marguerite L. (Carbone) Montagna of Springfield; his daughters: Gail, and her husband, Jeff Barnett of Orange, Connecticut, Marilyn Montagna, and Diane Higgins both of Springfield; He also leaves his grandchildren Andrea Gemignani, Kimberly Barnett, Melissa Higgins, and Alyson Higgins; one great-grandson; his sisters: Rena Verbeck of Titusbille, Florida and Irene Montagna of Westfield, Massachusetts; many nieces, and nephews.
